This Article is From Our September 2008 Advice & Tips:

The Importance of Self-Discipline

The story is told that Mahatma Gandhi was once approached by a mother who had an unusual request concerning her boy, who had a special problem. It seems that the child had a difficulty controlling his consumption of sugar and the mother asked Gandhi to speak with the boy and get him to stop. Gandhi agreed, but days passed and still no conversation had taken place. After a week or so, the mother went to Gandhi and expressed her disappointment that nothing had transpired. Gandhi’s reply was that before he could speak to the child, he himself had to stop eating sugar.

For words like discipline and authority to lose their stigma, we must recognize that what is required is, first and foremost, self-discipline on the part of the father. Fathers who wish to guide their children will have to take themselves in hand. This can be the most arduous task.

We must come to see that what we call misbehavior on the part of our children is often connected to our own shortcomings. If our children are impulsive or moody, quick to anger or slow to get started, we need to look first at ourselves. When we encounter our children’s most intractable behavior, there is a good chance that it has come from us.
