Values and Dads

Homer and Bart Being Bad...

Those who stand for nothing fall for anything”

-Alexander Hamilton, (1755-1804), one of the founding fathers and first Secretary
of the US Treasury.

The “whys” to the morals that men and children practice or don’t practice are directly tied to their values. (In other words, “why” you do something is tied to what is important to you.)

A value is something that has worth. Values as they relate to beliefs and behaviors are morals that have worth.

For morals and values to mean something, men must model morals and values, or “walk the talk.” Modeling is a vital teacher of morals and values. Dads who say one thing but do another don’t “walk the talk.” Instead, they confuse children. The result is an example of a moral that has no positive value.

The model of not “walking the talk” or “do as I say and not as I do” does teach children a moral-a negative one.

When men don’t do as they say, what are the children learning?

The bottom line is that children learn the “value” of not following through on commitments, on being disrespectful and being irresponsible.

It’s time to step up Dads and “walk the talk.”
