Recognizing and Understanding Children’s Feelings

You shouldn’t feel that way!
“Why are you crying? It didn’t hurt that bad!”
“Don’t you show me that angry face!”
“There’s no need for you to be so sad!”

How we prepare our children to handle their feelings will, in all likelihood, affect the quality of their life more than just about any other element of parenting. Feelings are that powerful. The worst thing we can do as parents is to ill prepare children for the tasks and challenges of life. Incompetence is a burden children suffer life long, especially when it is emotional incompetence. (The inability to be able to recognize and express feelings in a constructive manner)

Teach your children well!

It’s not impossible to have healthy and happy children. It just takes a lot of hard work-and honest helpful training. To accomplish this goal, try the following:

1. Be a model of good feelings recognition and communication.
2. Help children recognize their feelings.
3. Call attention to how others are feeling.
4. Promote children’s awareness of others.
5. Promote rationale behind feelings.
6. Promote non-verbal awareness.
7. Teach about nature.
