Stay Out of the Big Inning
Baseball and Fathering:

When Earl Weaver managed the Orioles he would regularly point out that in most games the team that lost gave up more runs in one inning than it was able to score in the whole game. He understood the potential for ruin that is in the big inning when disastrous events completely overshadow all our other efforts.

As fathers we have to learn to stay out of the disastrous innings, when our errors and our lack of control make such a mess. When angry words and angry actions inflame a difficult situation, we need to step off the mound and call time before we say or do things unintentionally that move us toward the flash point. Explosive events will be remembered for years and will overshadow many of the good things that we do for our children.
