This Article is From Our February 2010 Advice & Tips:

Teaching Children to Express Anger

This step-by-step plan is designed to be implemented at home with all family members- not just the kids.

Step 1 Talk with your children about anger.
It’s the expression of past hurt that wasn’t expressed.
When children feel hurt or pain or loss, talking about it is good. Keeping it inside is not.

Step 2 Emotions are feelings that have energy that need expression.

Step 3 Anger is OK, it’s the way it’s expressed that needs work.
Respect yourself. Don’t hurt yourself
Respect others. Don’t hurt others.
Respect your environment. Don’t destroy property or nature.

Step 4 Expressing anger in two stages: release of energy and talking about what led up to the anger.

Step 5 Brainstorm ways to release the energy.

Step 6 Talk about what happened that led to the anger. Talking is a way of connecting the feeling of anger with its logical cause. This connection is an important one.

Step 7 Make a plan and reward.
