Parents and Teens Need Empathy

Empathy, the ability of being aware, understanding and accepting another person’s feelings or motives, is the bond that holds families together. Empathy demonstrates a sense of caring by “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes” as the old saying goes. Empathy allows parents to believe in their teens, reassure them when they question, support them when they fail and guide them with gentle firmness.

Parents and teens learn ways of becoming aware of their own needs, desires, thoughts and feelings as well as those of other family members. Activities focus on increasing non-verbal communication skills, recognizing and managing feelings, and demonstrating empathy through positive touch.
